About My Work
I graduated from Massage School in March 1999 with a certificate in Integrated Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. In no way was I prepared for the life changing experience that massage school would ultimately be for me. Not in just the sense of my career but as an awakening, a journey in self-discovery. The experience was like an unraveling of so many mysteries of myself. Mysteries I had not even, until then, had the courage to look at. The most important discovery I made while there was that the seemingly shot in the dark journey I had been on my entire life was preparing me to do this work, this therapy of laying-on hands, this ancient art of massage, and that I had some very valuable and important talents as a healer.
I suppose I had always known there was something there, but probably thought everyone was that way. I've always been a touchy feely kind of person. One of the easiest ways for me to communicate is through touch. It's always been that by touching someone, I can let that person feel what I am feeling and maybe even know what I'm thinking if I want them to. When I touch someone, often I get an immediately understand of their mood and feel what they are feeling at that particular moment. Whether I really thought this was normal or whether I thought it was so strange that no one else would understand, I'm not quite sure. Nevertheless, I never discussed it with anyone and more or less, never thought about it much.
I also discovered that I had a natural talent for massage. It's based on intuition I think. In fact, that's what I call it in my promotional materials, intuitive touch. It works by being very conscious of the subtle energy flowing through my own body and tuning in and allowing that energy to gently mingle with the energy flowing through the client's body. By carefully setting my intent on nurturing, love, and healing I begin to see things that correlate with what I am feeling. It may be in the form of a vision or maybe just a sense of the client's condition. Sometimes, I even hear information about the client. Each of these ways of access to intuition came to me through exercises and meditations that I learned under the instruction of some truly enlightened teachers and healers at the Atlanta School of Massage and in my private research. I realized that all of this was a gift, not something that everyone had. Through massage therapy I learned to use this gift in a very methodical and concise way. This gift of healing through intuitive touch is the foundation of my work in massage.
I do not always discuss these techniques with my clients and they may never know that I have employed them. The most important things for the client to know and be aware of are, the sensations their body is feeling and the relaxation and sense of well being and safety that come with it. The body and the energy system move naturally toward health. Therefore, it is not necessary for the client to be conscious of the subtle methods I use to evoke healing. We are all "hard wired" to cooperate with this process.
What I have to offer my clients as a massage therapist are my strong and sensitive hands, a loving and giving nature, and some tried and tested techniques that if nothing else, will feel wonderful. What I have to offer my clients as a healer are a different and broadened view of the causes and cures of disease; access to information about life or medical situations that may not be available through other means; and working directly with them to enhance their natural healing abilities. What I have to offer my clients as a friend are my warm heart and a genuine desire to see them healthy, in body, mind and spirit.
